UK Weather Warning: Heavy Rain and 75mph Winds to Batter Britain This Week

The UK is bracing for severe weather as heavy rain and winds of up to 75mph are forecast to hit parts of the country this week. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for both rain and wind, covering large areas of southern England, Wales, the East Midlands, Yorkshire, and parts of southwest England from Wednesday evening through Thursday night.

Heavy Rain to Soak Southern and Eastern Regions

According to the Met Office, a powerful jet stream will drive a deep low-pressure system across the UK on Thursday, bringing persistent downpours and strong gusts across many regions.

Rain will move northeast from southern England late on Wednesday, continuing through Thursday, with some areas seeing up to 50mm of rainfall by early morning.

Parts of North Devon, Cornwall, and the east of England could experience even higher totals, leading to possible flooding and travel disruption. The yellow weather warning for rain will remain in effect until 9pm Thursday.

Strong Winds Could Cause Disruption

Alongside the rain, gusts of 55mph to 65mph are expected widely, with the potential to reach 75mph along coastal regions.

These strong winds may cause power outages, transport delays, and minor damage to buildings. Coastal communities are urged to take extra care as large waves could pose a danger to life near seafronts and coastal roads.

A separate yellow warning for wind is also in place for southwest England and parts of Wales, including Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, Swansea, and Pembrokeshire. Winds could reach 60mph in exposed coastal areas.

Met Office Issues Safety Advice

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern warned that the low-pressure system “is deepening as it crosses the UK,” bringing a swathe of strong winds and possible gales along southern and eastern coasts.

Before the storm hits, conditions are expected to bring a mix of sunshine and showers, but forecasters urge the public to prepare for deteriorating conditions from Wednesday night onward.

The Met Office advises:

  • Secure outdoor items and protect property from potential wind damage
  • Avoid unnecessary travel and plan routes carefully
  • Stay clear of large waves and cliffs along the coast
  • Remain indoors during peak wind periods whenever possible
