Over 1.6 Million UK Drivers Fined for Parking on Yellow Lines in 2024, AA Reveals

More than 1.6 million drivers across the UK were hit with Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) in 2024 for parking on single or double yellow lines, according to new data from The AA. The offence remains one of the most common parking violations in the country.

The research also found that nearly four in 10 drivers admit to breaking yellow line parking rules at least once — with 10% admitting to doing so repeatedly. The figures suggest a widening gap between parking enforcement and driver behaviour on UK roads.

Over half a million of the fines were issued by just 10 local councils, five of which are in London, collectively generating over £40 million in revenue — based on the standard £70 penalty charge.

Experts at The AA warn that the figures highlight both driver complacency and the growing financial impact of parking enforcement on motorists.
