Temperatures in the UK Set to Plunge Below 0°C Later This Month

Temperatures across the UK look set to plunge later this month, with forecasts suggesting parts of the country could dip below freezing. Weather maps from WXCHARTS indicate that by Wednesday, October 27, the mercury will fall into single digits across most of the British Isles — and below 0°C in northern regions.
At midnight UTC (1am BST), temperatures in southern England are expected to hover between 4°C and 9°C, while Wales could see lows of around 3°C. Parts of the northwest coast may remain slightly milder, closer to 9°C.
Further north, conditions will turn noticeably colder. In northern England, including areas of Lancashire, temperatures could fall to around 2°C, while Scotland looks set to bear the brunt of the cold snap, with overnight lows between 0°C and -1°C, and some spots possibly reaching -2°C.
The coldest conditions are forecast for:
- The Highlands
- Moray
- Perth and Kinross
- Stirling
- Argyll and Bute
- Western Angus
- Aberdeenshire
- Dumfries and Galloway
- South Lanarkshire
- Scottish Borders
- West Lothian
- Edinburgh, Midlothian, and East Lothian
Even northern Cumbria and Northumberland could briefly dip below freezing.
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland is expected to remain slightly milder, with lows between 2°C and 5°C.
Met Office Outlook
The Met Office’s long-range forecast for October 20–29 suggests a “rather unsettled pattern” across much of the UK, driven by low-pressure systems moving in from the North Atlantic.
“These will bring showers or longer spells of rain, perhaps accompanied by strong winds at times, but also interspersed with some drier and brighter interludes,” the Met Office said.
“Later in the period, there may be a transition to a slightly cooler and more showery northwesterly regime as high pressure builds over the Atlantic and low pressure becomes centred to the east of the UK.”
Temperatures are expected to be near or slightly above average at first, but may trend below normal later in the month as cooler air flows in from the northwest.
Short-Term Forecast
For now, much of the UK will remain cloudy this evening and overnight, with patchy drizzle possible in southern and eastern regions. Some clear spells may develop later, allowing conditions to turn chilly.
Thursday will stay mostly cloudy, with outbreaks of drizzle in southern and eastern areas, and an increasing chance of showers across northeast Scotland. Brighter spells may appear in some regions during the afternoon.
